Solitude

 

I have always been a girl that needs time alone. Being by myself is where I recharge, it is my home base and it is often when I can think clearly and creatively. I am coming off of a few very busy weeks and my mind and body are craving some alone time. Time by myself can actually be some of my most productive time; I tinker, I organize all the while thinking, scheming and plotting. It is the time where some of my most creative work is created - blog ideas, marketing work or new ways to get into the community. 

The term introvert has become mainstream after the release of Susan Cain's novel Quiet. Being an introvert seems to be more popular now than when I was growing up. I often wonder what sparked this, is it the fact that someone finally put a new face to introversion? In the past an introvert was shy, collected and meek and now we realize that is not that case. Is it because the world keeps getting louder and faster and we now physically crave silence and/or being alone? Or, is it that Eastern alternative medicine is making its way to the Western world and we are now seeing the benefits of silent activities such as meditation? 

Whatever the reason, I find my alone time crucial to my sanity and success. As life gets busy I have to make time to be alone, whether it is a few hours or a few days. I am curious how do you recharge? Is it time alone? If so, how do you accomplish it in your busy world?

Shared Bedrooms

As a child my sister and I shared a room for a short time. We both had twin beds with matching Popples comforter. Maybe it is because the first 5 years of my life involved sharing a bedroom with my sister but nothing melts my heart more than seeing two twin beds in a bedroom, especially decorated as a child's room. I have seen some great ideas on how to separate the room to allow both children to have their own space and personality. 

Different color, but same design, comforters can create a unique space for each child.

Pink + Red

Last week I spoke about navy and black matching and I thought of the other color combinations that I have been seeing that have clashed in the past. Pink and red is one of those combinations. I have seen the color put together recently and I really the combination. I particularly like red and pink together in outfits:

A Notable Pantry

A pantry is usually one of the must haves in a kitchen. It becomes a place to store all the extra food, canisters, dishes and anything else. What about actually showcasing your pantry like this one?

Paint Colors for a Seaside Home

Still lusting over the beach I put together my favorite Benjamin Moore paint colors for a seaside feel in your home.

Whether you actually live on the water or just want to create that feeling in your home, paint can always help. The trick is to use light, cool, airy colors. The color white will always work as a contrast to these paint colors or as the wall color. Overall, the rooms should be neutral, any upholstery or patterns in the room should be muted and subtle to create a seaside escape in your home.

A beach retreat

I'm back in Denver but missing the ocean. An often unknown fact is that New Hampshire has about 18 miles of coast! I grew up about 10 minutes away from the coast and there is nothing more peaceful and calming than watching the shore go in and out. 

Looking to bring that beach/ocean theme into the house but don't want to use the ever popular seaside decor collections of sand dollars, sea shells and sand? 

There are so many other creative alternatives to bring the beach into your home. 

How about beach themed artwork? With a very neutral room, the eye is immediately drawn to the beach artwork. 

Hanging an anchor on the wall. 

Use rope for common everyday tools around the home. 

Like a toilet paper holder. 

Better yet, what about using robe for the stair rails? 

When creating a beach retreat, I like to bring in elements of a beach or lake that make you indirectly think of water. What else would you bring into your dream beach house?

A great side table

Design Juxtaposition

One of my favorite words is in the dictionary is juxtaposition. According to Dictionary.com juxtaposition is defined as "an act or instance of placing close together or side by side, especially for comparison or contrast". In design juxtapositions are created by pairing opposing styles, textures or colors. Design juxtapositions make your eyes stop and focus since the look is usually unexpected.
