My Disappearing Act...

As much as I would love to say I have spent the last four weeks traveling the world and seeing exotic places, that would be a far cry from the truth. The harsh reality is that I have spent the majority of my time away in bed, sick with pneumonia. For some reason, I seem to be the only nonsmoker, non-asmatic person that struggles with upper respatory issues. I have had more bouts with bronchitis than I care to admit, although, this was my first experience with pneumonia.

I've been getting better for the last two weeks but needless to say, recovery has been a very slow process.  I spent the last day cleaning up the four weeks of being sick. I have finally gotten to unpacking my suitcase that was left at my front door when I returned home from New Hampshire on October 6th. I came home from New Hampshire incredibly sick and to this day I am still amazed at the energy i mustered that day to actually travel. I have thrown out countless tissues, discarded vegetables that I have used to juice, food in the pantry that I got sick from and my ultimate casaulity - my new baby blue zebra sweater that in my sickness I attempted to wash with an orange sweater.

Being this sick was a testament to my struggle with patience as in, I have none. I laid in bed calculating how many hours of work I had missed or even worse, how many more I may possibly miss. The uncertainty of not knowing how long it was actually take me to get well was anxiety provoking.

Not only did I need patience during this illness, I realized I really hadn't had paitence the last year. I have a friend that will often tell me "let it grow organically." I remember laughing the first time I heard her say that because it went against my approach of scheming, obsessing, willing it to work, worrying and then only breathing a sigh of relief when it actually worked. Then, repeat without taking any time in between sets. Although, I will never be a gal that just passively sits back and "let it grow organically", maybe I could do what I can and not expend so much unnecessary energy?

Do not get me wrong this energy is GREAT, until it is not. The energy is what motivates me, makes me insanely creative and what makes me good at what I do. Although, somewhere along the way the energy became too unbearable. The warning signs were there, I was in the perfect position to get this sick. I was coming off of an incredibly busy summer (like any and every real estate agent) but I was exhausted - physically, mentally, and emotionally. I took a vacation where I was a ball of stress and not relaxed, I was attached to my phone for email, calls, Internet. Although I took days off - I was never able to turn off the stress on these days.

As a real estate agent there is such a thin line between your personal life and business life but finding time to disconnect is a necessity. In typical Liz Daigle fashion, I spent my four week hiatus planning my brand, how I was going to come back stronger and with more energy, and how to enjoy more of both my business and personal life with a bit of patience sprinkled in.

A Grey Bedroom.

This week marks 8 months since I have moved into my new home and I have finally decided to take on the task of painting my bedroom. I absolutely love grey bedrooms and have been looking for inspiration. My ceilings (like many condos downtown) are concrete and I want to be sure grey walls and a concrete ceiling does not make my room feel cold. A bedroom should feel warm and comfortable as it is the place of rest in the home.

A number of the grey bedroom that I have looked at feel incredibly austere to me. As I gathered inspiration, I found that a lot of grey bedrooms that I gravitated toward included a natural wood element. Adding feature made out of wood to a grey room is a great way to balance out the cold feeling of grey can sometimes elicit.

How do you counterbalance grey in your home?

Need an idea for all your jewelry?

If you are anything like me, you have far too much jewelry. My necklaces clutter my bathroom sink until I eventually get fed up and store them in a box, never using them. I have seen a lot of DIY projects for ideas on how to store and showcase your jewelry but this idea was one of the best I have seen yet.

How do you store your jewelery?

Gold Fixtures

One of the hottest trends of 2015 is gold fixtures, especially in the kitchen and bathroom. My love for gold runs deep so I love this trend.

What do you think about gold fixtures? Would you do it in your home? I most definitely would, although, my home currently came equip with all silver fixtures. I will not be switching the fixtures out anytime soon and get my gold fix through pictures.

Creativity

Creativity is a huge motivating force for me. It allows me be imaginative, think bigger and colorful. Steve Jobs explained creativity the best:

But what happens when your creativity is depleted? I tend to be very creative but when I get incredibly busy or stressed, I lose most of my creativity. I no longer have the head space needed in order for me to create. As a real estate agent, the spring and summer tend to be my busiest part of the year and often times it is then that I lose sight of my creativity. I put one foot in front of the other and plow through the summer helping people buy and sell a new home. In times of stress and when life gets busy, what the best approaches to maintain creativity?

Full disclosure: I had to do research on this as I still struggle with this concept.

1. Meditate. This clears your mind and increases focus.
2. Write. In a journal, on post-its, anywhere to keep the ideas flowing.
3. Take a break. This helps refocus and take a step out of the day to day activities.
4. Organize. I find if my physical space is organized, my thoughts tend to be. Creative people do not tend to be the most organized people.
5. Surround yourself with other creative people. Bounce ideas off one another and chat about projects.
6. Start working on a new project. Often you are the most creative when you start a new project. Start a new one and then go back to the old project with your newfound creativity.
7. Attend a class. Freshen up on your skill set.
8. Exercise. This helps clear my mind and refocus.

How to you stay creative when life gets mundane or busy?

Rugs on Carpet.

The concept of layering is often talked about in design. Layering can create the room with the right amount of texture, color, shape and light. One mode of layering is using rugs as it helps bring texture and color into the room. Many people shy away from putting a rug on carpet but it is a great way to layer and break up a large carpeted room.

1. It can define a space in a large room.

 2. Provide a softer surface for your feet to land.

 3. Rugs can add color and texture to a room.

4. Also, rugs are a great way to hide a carpet stain.

What do you think? Do you like area rugs on carpet?

I need new yoga pants...

I have recently started yoga again now that my ankle is no longer twice its size. Since moving I had to find a new studio to practice and have happily found The Freyja Project in the Highlands. It is there that I realized I need new yoga pants. For a number of reasons, one, practicing 5 days a week requires either a lot of laundry or a few more pieces of clothes. Two, there are some really fun yoga pants that frequent the studio and who doesn't like bringing a bit more fun to yoga?

I stumbled upon Society6 which has pages of unique (fun) yoga pants. Here are a few of my favorites:

The great thing about this site is the design is created by artists. In addition to yoga pants with the design, you can also purchase cell phone casesart printstote bags,  throw pillows, and much more! What do you think of these prints?

A handwritten note.

Call me old fashioned but I love writing handwritten notes. There is something about going to your mailbox and getting something other than a bill. In the age of email, texts and social media, taking the time to sit down and write a note makes you stand out. Not only that, I am a firm believer the receiver of such a letter feels a more personal connection and touched.

Do you send out handwritten cards or do you think it is a lost art? I ask this as I prepare to put 15 thank you cards in the mail. Keeping track of stamps is another story....

Color Me: Coral

We finally have sun here in Denver! It seemed like for two months straight we had grey clouds and rain. This nice (typical) warm weather and lots of sun makes me happy. Through all of this rain I found myself getting a lot of use out of my coral raincoat and anywhere I went I always got a compliment on the coat. I am sure it was because the color stood out amidst the grey clouds. What color is more cheery than coral? Wondering how to incorporate coral into your house? Here are some great examples:

 Sources going clockwise: 1 2 3 4

Counsidering painting a wall coral? Use some of these paint color ideas.

How do you feel about the color coral in the home?

Black Trim

Looking to make a striking statement in your home? Consider painting your interior window trim black. Black trim accentuates the windows making them look like a feature of the room.

How do you feel black trim for the windows?

Benjamin Moore: Blue Danube

Have you seen Benjamin Moore Color Trends for 2015? It is a great starting point if you are considering painting a room and unsure what color to use. Colors on this list range from neutrals, dark, cool and warm. Recently I painted an accent wall in my living room Blue Danube, a 2015 color trend.

Blue Danube is a rich, bold blue that compliments cool colors and neutrals well. Choosing a paint color is always nerve-wracking as you have to envision the paint color in the room prior to actually painting it. I find searching Pinterest for the paint color helps because you can often find rooms painted the color already.

Rooms that were painted Blue Danube and I used as inspiration:

Gold Grout

Looking for a way to really make your tile backsplash or floor pop? Our first instinct is to place focus on the tile that we chose. This thought process certainly works as the tiles are the focal point, but another way to play up the tile is the grout. Grout is the paste/mortar that is placed in the gaps between the tiles. The most popular grout used in tile work is a white, black or grey but lately I have seen use of different colors of grout used. Gold, being one of them:

I absolutely love gold so I do like the look of gold grout, especially with the ever popular subway tiles. What do you think? Do you like it or do you think it looks outdated?

Sayings on the Wall

I always love to have fun with things in the home. My thought is if you can't be yourself in your home, where can you be? I recently showed a home where there were a number of decals with cute sayings on the walls. As a self- proclaimed quote junkie, I thought it was a cute and creative idea. Since viewing the home, I have seen some fun and unique (borderline eccentric) ways to incorporate quotes or sayings into your home.

Would you ever do this? If so, where and what would you say?
