Statement Piece in the Kitchen.

The cabinets may be a neutral white but the stove, back splash and brass fixtures make a very bold statement. I absolutely love this kitchen, what about you?

Mid Century Modern by Target

Target does it again- another great inexpensive line of furniture. This time its a mid century modern furniture line.
I've recently fund myself being drawn to the mid century style but it can be quite pricey! This mid century modern line at Target offers a cheaper alternative to West Elm's mid century line.

The line offers bookcases:

Desk and a coffee table:

And upholstered chairs:

Shop the entire collection here. Looking for something more local? There is a great mid century modern store in Denver called ModLivin.

Greige

Greige is a very popular paint color right now. If you are unsure what greige is, it is a combination of grey and beige. I like a lot of the greiges because it is great combination of cool and warm undertones. I think it is a great paint choice for any room in the home. Below I have picked out some of my favorite greiges:

Do you have a favorite greige? What is it?

Home is where the heart is

The other day I stumbled on this quote:

It made me stop and start think. Well, yes, isn't home a great word? I was born in the middle of the Cancer zodiac sign. For those of you how do not know much about Cancers, home is central to the zodiac sign. They are homebodies and "those born under this sign are "roots" kinds of people, and take great pleasure in the comforts of home and family." Source

Home is an interesting word because it can have many different connotations for people. It can be a physical place, a feeling of security, the act of gathering with family, or just a particular look. For me, home can be any of those but it is typically  a place I can come and recharge and also provides an immense sense of security and love. This year I have moved a total of four times, most moves were very temporary. Even though I love where I live right now, I still associate home with the last condo I had. Knowing myself, this will change once I have a move permeant place to live and put my stamp on it.

What does home mean to you? How do you feel when you are home?

A tree in the home.

I will find any way to bring the outside in. I absolutely love natural elements in the home. I once chased down fallen trees in the middle of a hurricane to grab the tree stumps for end tables. The tree stumps are still sitting on my porch BUT I had the intention....

These images bring new meaning to bringing the outside in.

The design part of me absolutely loves the idea! Why not literally bring the outside in? Who says you can't have a tree in your home? But the business part of me thinks, "will you need a bigger insurance policy with a tree in your home?"

Would you want a tree in your house?

My Absolute Favorite Cleaning Product

I am all about consolidation and making anything around the house just a little bit easier. After spending years with drawers filled with cleaning supplies, when I moved here I found I did not have enough room for multiple cleaning products. I bought one item- oxi clean.

Before I moved, I did a deep clean of my whole home. Someone had recommended using oxi clean for my tile and grout. Oh.my.goodness! I wish I had before and after pictures because it worked so well. I will not lie, it was hard work. I spent two days on my hands and knees with a brush but how great it looked created immense satisfaction. Along with cleaning tile, I use it as detergent, to clean the toilets and as a stain remover. According to this, oxi can be used to clean carpets, upholstery and a number of other things. Have you ever used oxi clean? Do you have your own go to cleaner?

Staging + Smell

Smell.. the sense that is often overlooked in a home. We all become so immune to smells in our home whether it be the food we cook, pets, clothes or any other fragrances. We become used to the smell of our home. It may not be a bad smell but smell is one thing we need to keep in mind when putting your home on the market.

When you put a home on the market, you want to make sure it presents the best it possible can. I always tell clients to keep in mind the smell. Your home will inevitable smell like you just by you living there. You want to impersonalize the home as much as possible so potential buyers can picture their family in the home.

If you are planning on selling your home there are certain things you can do to neutralize the smell:

  1. Avoid odorous food. When I had one of my homes on the market I made Brussels sprouts one night then had a showing the next day. The buyer actually made mention of the smell (36 hours after actually cooking). Foods that have a strong odor tend to stick around for quite some time.
  2. Shampoo carpets (especially if you have pets).
  3. Get furniture professionally cleaned.
  4. Deep clean all linens, duvets and wall treatments.
  5. Keep the home as clean as possible when showing it (nothing smells better than the smell of a clean home).
  6. If you (or even a past owner) smoked in the home, paint walls using a deodorizer primer and latex paint.
  7. Get fresh air circulating by replacing any air filters, furnace filters and air conditioner filters.
Most people's first instinct is to disguise any smells in the home with potpourri, candles or air fresheners. While I do think these are great ways to make the house smell nice, I would be careful with the scent used. Some of those products can be overpowering and everyone has different reactions to smells. I, personally, stray away from floral scents and anything citrus. I would recommend a lavender scent, as it is usually not overpowering and can be calming.

Statement Piece

What is orange and white and navy all over? A beautiful chair that would make a statement in any room.

This chair would be great at the end of a long dining room table or in a living or family room. It is certainly bold and it's presence in a room would make it the center. Therefore,  I would keep everything else in the room fairly neutral, allowing the focus to be the chair! What do you think? Would you have a chair like this in your home?

Brick + Dining Rooms

I mentioned my love for dining tables and rooms here because it emphasizes the concept of home and family. Brick is a great feature to add to a kitchen or dining room. Brick is often associated with a rustic decor but in actuality it can be added to any style- modern, contemporary, vintage, midcentury. Brick is timeless and a great element to bring into a home. I think brick in the dining room or kitchen looks great because together they create a great amount of synergism. To me, both brick and the dinning room are symbolic of strength and tradition.

How do you feel about brick in the dining room? Love it? Hate it?

Birthday Edition.

In honor of my birthday, I rounded up a few of my favorite type of pants - palazzo. I feel like people are unaware of how awesome these pants are! They look a lot like gaucho pants from years back with a wide leg starting at the waist. They are loose and light, perfect for the hot Denver days! You can find them in solid colors and also fun patterns.

OneTwoThreeFour

How do you feel about palazzo pants? Which of the four do you like? Number four is definitely my favorite!

A new approach to staging a home

I think staging a home for it to sell is a great idea and offers a return on investment. Most people are not visual and staging a home allows potential buyers to 'see' how the home can work for them. Staging helps people determine how large the rooms are in the house, how their furniture and goods will fit into the house and also the flow of the home. I just read this article which takes staging a home to a whole new level.

Actual people are living in vacant homes for staging purposes to "turn a house into a home" It makes the home appear more valuable because there is evidence of a family living in it. With this approach to staging, buyers can ACTUALLY visualize their own family in this home which sometimes does not automatically happen with staging furniture. What do you think? Is this better than staging a home with just furniture?

Statement Piece

I absolutely love statements pieces through the home. They act as a conversation starter and sets your home apart from others. I use statement pieces to reflect individuality and also to tell a story through your home. Statement pieces do not need to be flashy, they can be simple yet distinctive.

These antler curtain tiebacks are a great statement piece. For a person that loves the outdoors, animals or hunting they can bring character to your home.

Bedroom Floors

My client recently asked me if he should pull up the carpets in the bedrooms since there were wood floors underneath.Wood floors in the bedroom seem to be a personal preference. I, personally, love them in the bedroom. Some people would much prefer to have their first step out of bed be onto carpet. Keep in mind, if you are contemplating putting wood floors in the bedroom, it will not typically add value to your home since not all buyers want wood floors in the bedrooms. Although, I would highly recommend, make sure whatever flooring is in the before is in pristine condition before putting it on the market. Shampooing carpets and refinishing the wood floors ensures the room shows nicely to prospective buyers.

Bringing the Inside Out

The greatest thing about Denver for me- is the sun. I absolutely love it! Second to the sun, is the lack of humidity. Compared to the East Coast, it is hotter but can be a lot drier heat The nice weather ensures a lot of time is spent outside and I have been looking for ways to bring inside outside (without actually camping).

My absolute favorite idea? An outside shower.

I have had the opportunity to go to a number of resorts in the past that have outside showers, the last one was a resort in Costa Rica. The shower had a great view of water, mountains and monkeys. Although, a shower outside may not be all that suitable for homes in the city, it would be a great addition to a home in the mountains.
